La comparación de la morfología externa y la genitalia masculina entre Platyderus saezi y las especies afines P. varians, P. lusitanicus y P. montanellus indica que la primera presenta caracteres distintivos que confirman su validez específica. Estas especies presentan un patrón de segregación altitudinal en el Sistema Central, coherente con la hipótesis de expansión geográfica de P. montanellus y P. saezi hacia el sur de la Península Ibérica, más acusada en el caso de esta última especie, cuya área de distribución se extiende hasta las marismas del Guadalquivir. La distribución actual de P. saezi es además congruente con una hipótesis previa acerca de su llegada al borde meridional de la península en épocas pasadas, seguida de un proceso de especiación hacia formas troglobias y endogeas.

New data on Platyderus saezi Vuillefroy, 1868 (Coleoptera, Caraboidea). Comparison between morphology and male genitalia of Platyderus saezi and the related species P. varians, P. lusitanicus and P. montanellus, suggests that the former species has distinctive characteristics that confirm its validity. These four species display an altitudinal segregation pattern in the Sistema Central (Cetnral Spain) consistent with a hypothesis about a southwards expansion of P. montanellus and P. saezi through the Iberian peninsula, more striking in the case of the last species, whose southermost limits reach the Marismas del Guadalquivir (near Doñana, Seville). Present distribution of P. saezi also agrees with a previous hypothesis about its arriving to the southern edges of the Iberian peninsula during the last glaciation event, where it speciated into troglobic and endogeous taxa.
