In this paper, we present the results of a wide faunistic survey on stonefl ies (Plecoptera) carried out from 2006 to 2011 at 158 sites distributed throughout Spain. Moreover, we have reviewed the literature for all publications on this insect group in this area since the edition of the last catalogue and review in 2003. Data from both sources have been combined to update the current knowledge of the distribution of these organisms. In the present study, 73 species have been collected, 32 of them expanding their known distribution. Moreover, some of these species have been collected in some provinces after more than 40 years, confirming their current existence. Considering the literature, we place the current number of Spanish stonefl y species (including the Spanish part of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands) at 144, approximately one third of the European Plecoptera fauna. All this information will be useful in conservation tasks of these insects within the current framework of degradation and destruction of habitats as well as global change, given their extreme vulnerability.organismos. En el presente estudio, 73 especies han sido colectadas y 32 han aumentado su distribución previamente conocida. Además, algunas de estas especies han sido colectadas en algunas provincias después de más de 40 años, confi rmando su existencia actual en ellas. Considerando también la información bibliográfi ca, el número actual de especies de plecópteros españoles (incluyendo la parte española de la península ibérica y las Islas Baleares) es 144, aproximadamente un tercio de la fauna europea. Todo este conocimiento será útil en tareas de conservación de estos insectos en el marco actual de degradación y destrucción de hábitats, y cambio climático, dada su extrema vulnerabilidad.

En este artículo mostramos los resultados de un amplio estudio faunístico sobre plecópteros (Plecoptera) llevado a cabo desde 2006 a 2011 en 158 localidades distribuidas por toda España. Además, hemos realizado una revisión bibliográfi ca de todas las publicaciones sobre este grupo animal en este área desde la edición del último catálogo y revisión en 2003.
