Biodiversity of blackflies (Diptera, Simuliidae) in the basins of the Algar, Amadorio, Monnegre and Serpis rivers (Alicante and Valencia Provinces, East of the Iberian Peninsula)

ABSTRACT
The distribution and biology of Simuliidae in the province of Alicante, in Eastern Spain, were investigated by collecting from rivers and recording associated environmental data. Fourteen species (Simulium angustipes, Simulium angustitarse, Simulium argyreatum, Simulium bezzii, Simulium cryophilum, Simulium erythrocephalum, Simulium intermedium, Simulium ornatum, Simulium petricolum, Simulium pseudequinum, Simulium reptans, Simulium sergenti, Simulium trifasciatum and Simulium velutinum) were detected in the Algar, Amadorio, Monnegre and Serpis rivers. New data are presented regarding the species which were the most abundant and widely distributed throughout the studied territory. These were: S. intermedium, S. angustitarse and S. cryophilum; while S. argyreatum, S. bezzii, S. angustipes and S. pseudequinum were the least abundant.
RESUMEN
Se muestrearon y registraron datos ambientales de los ríos de la provincia de Alicante, en el este de España, para conocer la distribución y biología de la familia Simuliidae. Se detectaron 14 especies (Simulium angustipes, Simulium angustitarse, Simulium argyreatum, Simulium bezzii, Simulium cryophilum, Simulium erythrocephalum, Simulium intermedium, Simulium ornatum, Simulium petricolum, Simulium pseudequinum, Simulium reptans, Simulium sergenti, Simulium trifasciatum y Simulium velutinum) en los ríos Algar, Amadorio, Monnegre y Serpis. Se presentan nuevos datos sobre las especies más abundantes y ampliamente distribuidas en el territorio estudiado. Éstas fueron: S. intermedium, S. angustitarse y S. cryophilum; mientras que S. argyreatum, S. bezzii, S. angustipes y S. pseudequinum fueron las menos abundantes.
