Elaphrus lheritieri es una especie rara que se ha encontrado por tercera vez en la Península Ibérica, en el arroyo del Capitán (Jaén), junto con E. pyrenaeus y otras 54 especies que forman una comunidad propia de suelos eutróficos encharcados. Se describen las características morfológicas que eprmiten diferenciar a E. lheritieri de E. pyrenaeus y especies afines. Las preferencias ecológicas de esta especie apuntan hacia una adaptación a suelos menos húmedos que los que ocupan habitualmente las especies de Elaphrus, la cual explica los datos actuales de su distribución. No se confirma la adaptación de E. lheritieri a lagunas saladas (JEANNE, 1966), ni su carácter de relicto glaciar en Marruecos (ANTOINE, 1955).

Elaphrus lheritieri is a rare species that has been found for the third time in the Iberian Peninsula, in the Arroyo del Capitán (Jaén), together with E. pyrenaeus and another 54 species that make up a typical riparian community of moors with eutrophic soils. It is described the morphological characteristics that allow for the identification of E. lheritieri from E. pyrenaeus and other akin species. The ecological preferences of this species suggest that it is adapted to soils less wet than those ones usually preferred by other congeneric species, a hypothesis that agrees with present data of its distribution. It is not corroborated previous suggestions about its adaptation to saline water bodies (JEANNE, 1966) or its chracter of glaciar relict (ANTOINE, 1955).
